About Me

John Clum
I'm Professor Emeritus of Theater Studies and English at Duke University. I have written several books and scores of articles on modern and contemporary British and American drama. My books include ACTING GAY: MALE HOMOSEXUALITY IN MODERN DRAMA, SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS: MUSICAL THEATER AND GAY CULTURE, THE DRAMA OF MARRIAGE: GAY PLAYWRIGHTS/STRAIGHT MARRIAGE IN BRITISH AND AMERICAN DRAMA FROM OSCAR WILDE TO THE PRESENT, and THE PLAYS OF ARTHUR LAURENTS: POLITIC, LOVE, AND BETRAYAL and, most recently, TERRENCE McNALLY AND AMERICAN GAY DRAMA, 1965-2015. I have also edited a number of anthologies. My plays include RANDY'S HOUSE which has been produced all over the U.S. HEARTBREAK EXPRESS, an opera with music by George Lam and libretto by me, was produced in New York in 2015. I have directed over seventy-five theatrical and operatic productions. I also lecture on theater, particularly London theater, to theater tours and programs.
